Ramps and grids
Museum architecture from the 80’s
Saturday 30 November 2024
In the 80s and 90s, Rotterdam rapidly developed as a cultural destination: with new cultural institutions and brand new museum buildings. During this excursion, you will discover the museums in a different way: not the exhibitions but the museum buildings themselves are on display. The Maritime Museum, the Kunsthal and the Netherlands Architecture Institute (now: Nieuwe Instituut) share the materiality and formal language of the 80s and 90s, despite the three completely different architects. Wander over the ramps, disappear under the arcades and brave your fear of heights as you look down through the grid floors. Iris van der Wal, architect and spatial designer, and programme maker Stefanie Korrel take you along the shapes and stories behind the buildings. The excursion ends at OMI in the exhibition Rotterdam Culture City.
