Architectures of Safety
Kees van Leeuwen
Thursday 24 September 2026
After Summer School returns from 23 to 26 September 2026 with four days of city classes scattered across Rotterdam. A wide variety of makers, thinkers and organisations will share their methods for changing the city — by looking, listening, writing, archiving, collaborating, activating, researching and designing differently. OMI presents Architectures of Safety: The Bunker in the Time of the Emergency Kit with artist Kees van Leeuwen. The program starts at BAR OMI, a gathering space for art, unexpected performances, talks and workshops.
Join visual artist Kees van Leeuwen, who is fascinated by nuclear bunkers, for a descent into a Rotterdam bomb shelter. In this workshop, we will learn from the bunker structure — a radical architectural response to fear — by exploring it spatially and sensorially. How does fear influence the way we shape the future? While bunkers provided collective protection during the Cold War, today’s crisis response increasingly focuses on individual self-reliance. How can community and solidarity offer an alternative to rising individualism when dealing with uncertainty?
