From Clay to Bricks: workshop by Stadsgrond

22 February 2025

During the workshop From Clay to Brick, architect Georges Taminiau shares his production technique for Stadsgrond. What can be made from leftover clay soil? From simple furniture to full-scale buildings, clay is both strong and easily moldable, making it suitable for a wide range of (construction) projects.

On this Saturday afternoon, participants learn the basic skills. Georges explains where the mix of soil, water, and ‘stones’ comes from—ranging from the zoo in Emmen to areas around Rotterdam—and how these origins influence the final result. The source of the clay is reflected in the color and texture of the processed material.

After this introduction, two large bricks are made. Everyone gets hands-on, kneading the large lumps of clay and compacting them into solid bricks. Under Georges’ guidance, loose soil is transformed into sturdy building blocks.
