Director Jim Jarmusch makes it work through a series of offbeat, captivating vignettes—featuring famous actors, musicians and entertainers. Unexpected pairings as Iggy Pop and Tom Waits, Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan and Cate Blanchett and her envious twin. They slurp coffee, smoke and play with their public image, poke fun at themselves or get caught up in a competition: who is the most famous?

In the film Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) Jarmusch combined eleven short stories – shot between 1986 and 2003 – all revolving around the everyday activities of drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. The result? A sublime, absurdist omnibus of human interactions and surreal conversations.
