Urban Ruins and Decadence

Music from 1978 till 1987

“An urban ruin is a place that has fallen outside the economic life of the city, and it is in some way an ideal home for art that also falls outside the ordinary production and consumption” – Rebecca Solnit, A Field Guide to Getting Lost

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, there was a significant crossover between music – no wave, post-punk, boogie, rap – and the art world, leading to a rich “do-it yourself” subculture where music venues, clubs and galleries were sites of innovation and experimentation for artists and musicians. This interaction was evident in new shared aesthetics across album art, fashion, flyers, as well as between performance and exhibitions. Lines were  blurred between disciplines: music, dance, and opera with the visual arts and vice-versa.

Urban Ruins and Decadence is a tribute to this period in which cities like New York, Berlin, Paris, Brussels and London, with their ruined city centres, offered space for radical creativity and inclusive collaborations. Spinning records from the period is ClublePOP, with live music and visual performance by ЯotoЯ.
