The New Rotterdam

Post 65 Files

In the publication Post 65 Files – The New Rotterdam, OMI looks back at the Post 65 manifestations of 2023 and 2024. Using archive photos, you will take a walk through Rotterdam in the 1970s and 1980s. The journey offers an unembellished look at the city on the cusp of an unprecedented period of flourishing. Today’s Rotterdam would be unimaginable without the Post 65 period and the many ideas, proposals and competitions that enriched the city. A recurring discussion centred on the desire for conviviality and the appreciation for open spaces within the city. However, in 1987, architect Rem Koolhaas cautioned against the loss of a distinctive Rotterdam characteristic, its empty spaces: ‘What a pity that such a city tries to look like other cities. It should preserve its uniqueness.’
