Sand Movements 2

Guided tour by Lara Almarcegui and Michiel van der Meulen

Saturday 11 April 2026

Join a collective walk along the Rotte, exploring what lies beneath our feet with Artist Lara Almarcegui and Geologist Michiel van der Meulen. This tour is a part of the Landscape Crafting exhibition at OMI, exploring our relationship with the materials that make up our built environment, and the project Waterworks, a residency programme at Buitenplaats Brienenoord.

For this tour, Almarcegui collaborates with expert in sand Michiel van der Meulen (Chief Geologist from TNO, Geological Survey Netherlands) – for an interdisciplinary understanding of our landscape transformation. He proposed the second edition of this tour along the Rotte River – beginning at the crossing point of the new A16 highway – because of the highly interesting geologies of sand located there. Every day in the Netherlands, vast quantities of natural raw materials are moved, of which the most common is sand. Through sand, the story of the ongoing transformation of the Dutch landscape is depicted. The Rotte is one of these landscapes in flux.

Lara Almarcegui (Zaragoza/Rotterdam) explores in her practice the ground and its relation to construction materials, how it is used and how it is being transformed. Calculating the weight of sand over many years in the Netherlands, Lara Almarcegui presents her provocative ‘Zand in Nederland’ text at OMI. Over the coming years, she will lead experts and guests to walk along the places that will transform, to learn together with them.

Sand Movements is organised in collaboration with Waterworks at Buitenplaats Brienenoord, where artists are invited to explore their relationship with water. The first edition of Sand Movements began at Waterworks, where Almarcegui was the last resident.
