Material Relations | Sand
From extraction to loam plaster
Saturday, 2 May 2026
Sand plays a leading role in the Netherlands’ material cycle. We find it everywhere, from concrete foundations to brick walls and the glass we look through. Yet we rarely recognize it as sand anymore. As it changes form, the value we attribute to it changes as well. During the workshop, we want to better understand and further develop our relationships with materials, from extraction to use.
Bring your own sample of earth – sand and clay – from your home environment. During the workshop the materials will be used to make loam plaster, a material in which sand remains visible, and which can also be reused. Thought this process of making, you get a better understanding of of the different relationships to material use. Together we will discuss the ongoing relationship to extraction and construction processes exploring the built, social and ecological environments in which material culture takes place.
This workshop of architects Holly Dale and Willie Vogel is part of the exhibition Landscape Crafting.
