OMI x WdKA | Between public and private: designing for in-between spaces
17 October 2024
From the Doelen and the Schouwburg to the Maritime Museum and the Central Library: during the manifestation Rotterdam Culture City students Spatial Design of the Willem de Kooning Academy will work on cultural sites in the centre of Rotterdam, designed in the 1980s. Using two group assignments, 45 students will work on a longer-term design and an on-site intervention. Central to the assignments is the dynamic between indoor and outdoor space. How do you merge city life outside with activities inside? It is precisely this in-between space that is interesting for spatial designers, but also a complex task. What is ‘semi-public?’ Which spaces are ‘semi-private’? And with what interventions do you give passers-by and visitors a unique, urban experience in the centre of Rotterdam?
On 15 and 17 October, the students started working on their temporary interventions. In the coming weeks, the Spatial Design students will elaborate further on the assignment, after which the designs will be exhibited at OMI in December.
