A prompt is a short instruction or invitation that activates reflection or action in relation to a place, situation, or system. Prompts can be poetic, activist, bodily, relational, and spatial.

At BAR OMI interdisciplinary artist Merel Smitt hosts a workshop on prompt writing. Together we will look at a variety of existing prompts from her own practice and from other artists, play around with them, and eventually write our own to exchange with each other.

In her work Merel often uses prompts and scores to map places and situations that are part of her artistic research or to pass on her experiences and findings to others. Prompts can be understood as ways to look differently at the city and its architecture, to reimagine not only how spaces are used and shared but also how we move through them and relate to them. The workshop is playful and collective, inviting participants to experiment and exchange perspectives. By the end, we will have created a collection of prompts to bring into our everyday lives to explore, question, and disrupt familiar patterns.
