Material Relations | Sand
2 May 2026
Sand plays a leading role in the materials used across the Netherlands. It can be found in concrete foundations, brick walls, and even the window you’re looking through. Yet it is rarely still recognisable as sand. As the material changes form, the value attributed to it shifts as well.
In this workshop, part of the Landscape Crafting exhibition, the relationship to materials takes centre stage — from extraction to use. Participants are asked to bring sand and clay from their immediate surroundings. These materials are processed into clay plaster, a reusable material in which the sand remains visible. By going through the making process firsthand, a deeper understanding emerges of how the relationship to raw materials has shifted — from extraction to the built, social, and ecological environments in which they end up.
