Phantom City Revisited

Kim Bouvy

18 June 2022

A walk through Rotterdam as Phantom City. About 15 years ago, photographer Kim Bouvy started a fascinating photo book about Rotterdam: Phantom City. The city is both the main character and the setting in a partly real, partly fictional narrative about the past and possible future of this city. With the black-and-white images of desolate places in the city center, she provides a poetic commentary on the city’s fascination with its image.

The walk takes you past the places from her book, which have now changed beyond recognition due to the many new buildings such as the Market Hall and the residential towers in the Maritime District. But what do all those fancy buildings look like, early in the morning, in a deserted city. Wander through the Phantom City of then and now with Kim Bouvy.
