Glaze the city!

Design your own facade tile

Saturday 9 May 2026

What could our built environment look like if we treated the city as an urban mine? Re-directing local, and sometimes toxic, waste streams of Rotterdam, Urban Glaze focus on the re-use of dredged material from our rivers in their goal to glaze the city.

As part of the Landscape Crafting exhibition at at OMI, join Urban Glaze for this hands-on workshop to sculpt your own facade tile, experimenting with what a contemporary ornamentation could look like. Together, Rink and Eva will demonstrate how they transform specific urban waste streams into a circular glaze – with the ultimate goal of architectural application.

They’ll first take you through their experiments, insights, and lessons learned before you get to test for yourself with the making of a tile. Inspired by shapes and textures from the city, you can scratch or build into the clay your own story. After the workshop, the tiles will be glazed with an Urban Glaze of your choice, and subsequently fired by Rink and Eva.

This workshop is for anyone curious about new materials, circular design, and the city as a source of raw material. Participants’ designs will receive a unique (and possibly surprising) finish, which will be presented and at the Landscape Crafting closing event at OMI on 16th May, where the tiles can be collected.

There is no prior ceramics experience required! Bring your own inspiration for a facade tile to share with the group (think reference photos, or sketches).
