Ramps & Grids: Museum Architecture

30 November 2024

On Saturday, November 30, OMI set out with spatial designer Iris van der Wal and program maker Stefanie Korrel to explore museum architecture from the 1980s.

During the excursion, the focus is not on the exhibitions in the museums but on the design of the museum buildings themselves, as explained by Iris and Stefanie. Although the Maritime Museum, the Kunsthal, and the Netherlands Architecture Institute (now: Nieuwe Instituut) were designed and developed by three completely different architects, they share a lot of unexpected similarities of the 80s and 90s.

In the tour the participants discover firsthand what makes this architecture so unique, exploring ramps, arcades, and grid floors in detail. The excursion ends at OMI with the exhibition Rotterdam Culture City, where Iris shows how the materials and forms of these buildings inspired her spatial design for the exhibition.
